A Diabetic’s To Do List for 2009

Published by lordfluffy at 3:54 pm under Health, Personal Experience Edit This

It’s early January and my ears still ring from the “ding” as my insurance deductible reset. The time has come for me to think about what it is I need to get done for 2009 to make sure I stay healthy and not let my diabetes get the better of me. The list goes something like this:

  1. Schedule a Checkup with my Primary Care Physician: I’m looking at my next appointment being in June, but I need to look at getting an A1C and see if my doctor is happy with my progress.
  2. Eye Exam: Need to make sure that my blood sugar issues haven’t further damaged my already contact assisted peepers.
  3. Teeth Cleaning: Going to the Dentist may be about as much fun as… well, going to the dentist is pretty much on the bottom of the list. As my doc reminded me, though, gum disease has been connected to heart disease, and with diabetes already putting marbles in that jar it’s best I make sure my mouth is all spic and span.
  4. Set Fitness Goals: Like I said last week, I’m not doing a New Year’s Resolution proper, but as I’ve yet to convince my tummy to shrink by force of will, I need to start thinking what I can do to help alleviate my body of nonessential mass.
  5. Plot out some of the rest of my life: People with a plan live longer. Have something to do, you tend to stick around for it. The more I focus on having things to do while I’m around and functional the more likely it is I’m going to stay that way.

By no means a comprehensive list, it’s enough to think about for now. What’s on your list this year?

I’ve been a diabetic for 19 years and I’ve learned to live my life in spite of diabetes. As they say on dLife, I’m a person with diabetes, not a diabetic.

Your goals are good. I hope you are checking your blood sugar daily. Having that sort of input really helps so there aren’t any big surprises when that A1c comes along.

Good luck with meeting your goals. They all seem manageable.
